Every time he would see a monk coming, Luzu of Cizhou would immediately face the wall. When Nanquan heard of this, he said, "Usually, before I'd teach a monk I'd say, 'Get an understanding before the time the Buddhas had come into the world,' and yet I've not found one, or even half a one—his way will go on up to the year of the ass."
[0297b15] 池州魯祖。尋常見僧來便面壁。南泉聞曰。我尋常向師僧道。向佛未出世時會取。尚不得一個半個。他恁麼驢年去。
Luzu's solitary wind shakes the four directions—
Monks come to face the wall, few people know.
Nanquan mentions the affair of the year of the ass,
Could've also asked, "What time is it now?"
