(49) Jingshan's dot
Great Master Ma had Zhizang take a letter to Jingshan. (Yangshan: I don't know what news is in the letter.)
Jingshan took the letter, opened it, and saw a circle. (Yangshan: What does it say?)
He put a dot in the center. (Yangshan: He can't hold still.)
When the National Teacher heard this mentioned, he said, "Jingshan was still confused by Master Ma." (Yangshan: This is a spirit recognizing a spirit, a thief recognizing a thief.)

Yo͞ok Welcome! Meet me My comment: That's just the Case. Xuedou is going to talk about it for half a page, and then Yuanwu is going to talk about the Case and Xuedou for a whole page. Spoiler alert: Nothing will come of it.
But the question is... why are they so excited about this? One guy tells another guy to send a third guy a letter... and in the letter just draw a circle.
This other guy gets the letter, puts a dot in the circle, and everybody loses their @#$#.
This really happened. Zen is all about historical records, not bible worship. Plus it's too dumb to make up.
And these real life Buddhas, actual Buddhas, walking around using the restroom and demanding people bring them fans and @#$#, are all excited to talk about it.
All the Buddhists, including Japanese "Zen-Buddhists" lineages like Dogenism (not Soto) and Hakuinism (not Rinzai), all Buddhists worship Buddhas, so naturally they aren't honest about what a Buddha is.
Zen produces Buddhas. So naturally Masters and students alike find it funny that Buddhas aren't sacred or ordinary, and love to laugh and laugh and laugh...
Still though... a letter with a circle in it... that's messed up... but if you get a letter in the mail... either way...
Watch your ass.
You are in Buddha Town now, baby.
