My advice is to rid yourselves of all your previous ideas about STUDYING Mind or PERCEIVING it. When you are rid of them, you will no longer lose yourself amidst sophistries. Regard the process exactly as you would regard the shoveling of dung.
THE ZEN TEACHING OF HUANG PO, Grove Press, 1958, p.130
Why must I shovel the dung out of my head when my bowels do the same job much better and without prompting? Why do we fault our minds for doing what minds were made to do? The old men say our picking and choosing is what causes our distress, so....just stop picking and choosing? Let me accept what is? What if what is, is shit? Keep shoveling from the imaginary pile of dung within to help ourselves become comfortable with the very real pile of dung without? Where is my imaginary shovel to contend with this imaginary dung heap? How will I know when I'm done? Or does the mind dung pile replenish magically? If so, why doesn't it vanish away equally as easily? It does? How could I shovel it all out in ONE BIG LOAD? We're all kinda discomfited by the dictates of our toilet, but nobody wants the shit and piss train to stop because that means we DED. The problem of living is life? The problem of dying is death? Who does not live and die? Nobody, that's who. But who is nobody? NOBODY. I have no idea. Not even a no-idea idea.
Wholeheartedness is wholehearted.
