One time the Master said, “If you would experience that which transcends even the Buddha, you must first be capable of a bit of conversation.”
Webster defines conversation as ”oral exchange of sentiments, observations, opinions, or ideas”
I don’t think Zen Masters value in itself sentiments, opinions, and ideas so is Dongshan stating something that most people can innately do or something that is itself rare?
But Zen Masters are master conversationalists if we look at the thousand FREAKIN year record.
I have some more questions:
What are some instances of engaging in conversation that meet this standard?
What are some non-examples?
