Joshu went to the place of Master Hyakujo.
Hyakujo asked, "Where have you come from?"
Joshu said, "From Master Nansen."
Hyakujo said, "What words does Nansen use to teach the people?"
Joshu said, "Once he said, 'Those who have not yet attained enlightenment should behave solemnly.'"
Hyakujo scolded Joshu.
Joshu pretended to be astonished.
Hyakujo said, "That's a fine solemnity."
Performing a dance, Joshu left.

My comment
How to approach such a case, as students of Zen? We should study it wisely and in its every detail.
What stands out here is the statement, 'those who have not yet attained enlightenment should behave solemnly.' This is very good advice.
Students who are not enlightened are advised to behave solemnly. You know which ones you are. Please respect the wishes of master Joshu.
As regards master Joshu's dance as he left. We can hardly interpret it as a solemn gesture. Who knows why the master behaves in such a way?
We need to continue reading and researching to understand his actions. It's very important that we know what we're talking about.
A single false word can ruin our study. We must approach it with care, vigilance and in some cases, fear.
