Buddha said; blessed are those who do not tremble in fear or awe when they hear this teaching
Fear or awe aren't just unhelpful in the context of the dharma. The "it's your tiger" case is an obvious example. Zen is all the time, not just when you're reading or thinking about it. You might already be in a state of awe or fear without even having fully noticed it. Past fears you haven't fully confronted obviously count as well. As long as the behaviour hasn't fully changed to the point it doesn't show up anymore, like when facing a nightmare, it's not done.
Who sees me by form
Who sees me by sound
Perverted are his footsteps upon the way
For he cannot percieve the tathagata
Drop your image. It isn't working. For anybody.
