Zen Masters: Crude in Life & Arrogant in Death

Damei, hearing the cry of a flying squirrel, said to a group, "Just this thing, not anything else. You keep it well - I'm going."

Xuedou said, "This fellow was crude in life and arrogant in death. 'Just this thing, not anything else' - what thing is this? Was there any bequest or not? There is a type of person who cannot cut off Damei's footsteps, and just says he was in too much of a hurry to get on his way."

If you say that Damei was talking about the Great Beatific Vision of Buddha, you're stuck trying to gouge flesh at random to find the all enlightening carbuncle. How silly. Won't find it that way for 10,000 years.

But how will you keep well Damei's carbuncle?

...

Anyone still dare come into /r/Zen to whine about Zen Masters being a crude and arrogant bunch?

(Oh wait, dead-man Yunmen's already smashed their kneecaps and Linji buried them alive. Suckerz.)
