The temple administrator approached Yaoshan and said, "Everyone has been wanting instruction for a long time. Please, master, will you give a talk?"
So Yaoshan had the administrator ring the bell, and everyone gathered in the hall. Yaoshan sat on the seat, and after a while, got off the seat, and went back to his room.
The administrator followed after him and asked, "I asked you to expound the teaching for everyone, and you got on the seat, and got off the seat, without saying anything."
Yaoshan said, "For sutras there are teachers of sutras. For treatises there are teachers of treatises. How can you question this old monk?"
There is a place for studying the primary texts.
Study can illuminate as much as it can obscure.
If you think you know something, watch out.
If you think there is something to be known, watch out!
Since Yaoshan didn't know anything, he didn't say anything.
