世尊、昔、在靈山會上拈花示衆。
Once upon a time, when Buddha was at Mount Grdhrakuta, he plucked a flower and held it aloft before the assembly.
是時、衆皆默然。
At that time, each and every single one among the assembled was speechless.
惟迦葉者破顔微笑。
It was only Kasyapa’s face that smiled.
世尊云、吾有正方眼藏、涅槃妙心、實相無相、微妙法門、不立文字、教外別傳、付囑摩訶迦葉。
Buddha said, "I have the True Dharma Eye, the Incomparable Mind Free of Defects, the True Reality without Form, the Mysterious Gateway, specially transmitted outside the teachings and not reliant on written words; this I entrust to the Great Kasyapa."
This kills people again and again and again and again, that's why it's so infamous!! But even both of those two clowns were improvising with what was at hand and in a haphazard, slipshod way. Wumen goes on to call Buddha 'hanging a sheep’s head and selling dog meat'--how many actually understand this?
Before going on to suture together a garland of dead flowers, what about that which saw it even before "Once upon a time"?
BRING IT FORTH!!!
