The Real Shobogenzo: Everybody wants in on this one

Dahui's Real Original, the First Shobogenzo:

231.

Xuefeng said, “There are people who starve to death sitting by a basket of food; there are folks who die of thirst on the bank of a river.” 

Xuansha said, “There are people who starve to death inside a basket of food, people who die of thirst with their heads in the water.” 

Yunmen said, “The whole body is food, the whole body is water.”

Citing this, Dahui shouted and said, “Talkative teachers are irrepressibly outstanding indeed.  ‘The whole body is food, the whole body is water’—where does this information come from?”

ewk note: Yunmen and Xuansha came from Xuefeng, of course. Dahui was another branch of the family, but look at him moving up on the outside! And there they are, neck and neck and neck and neck! What a disgrace. Where does this information come from? That's the kind of talk that makes people thirsty.
