Quick 24-hour Challenge

  1. Don’t kill
  2. Don’t steal
  3. Refrain from sexual activity
  4. Don’t lie
  5. Refrain from consuming alcohol and recreational drugs
  6. Refrain from eating after noon
  7. Refrain from sensory experiences such as dancing, singing, listening to music, watching movies or shows, using perfumes or cosmetics, wearing luxurious clothes, etc.
  8. Sleep on a low and modest place (I.e. you can sleep on a couch, or on a small thin mattress, or on the floor — the idea is not to seek discomfort, but to avoid luxury)

These are arbitrary, random rules. It’s just a quick game.

While this is not Zen per se, I share it here because I think it is conducive to some observation of our own attachments and can be an interesting experiment. I believe this small challenge kind of points towards the same direction than Zen: non attachment, dispassion, etc.

So I have two questions to all of you:

  1. Would you say this challenge is useful, neutral, or counterproductive to one’s Zen practice? On either case: Why?

  2. Wanna join the challenge right now? Why? Why not?
