The bolded text is written-character-to-pegged-word, the italicized text is transliterated-character-to-pegged-word, the basic non-bolded non-italicized text outside of parentheses is simply the transliteration tied to some word that shares that transliteration based off whim and context, and the text in parentheses is pure whim in response to the other three translations. Each thread flows through itself, and also weaves into the others, and also includes Sekida's translation as part of the weave- which is interesting because he died before I was born. Of course, the weave presents an interesting conundrum: since Sekida's translation fits the weave so well, how much of this can be scrupulously chopped away before cutting into an "authoritative" interpretation? What makes a zen authority beyond sheer bloviating?
