Mingben’s Zen contra Buddhism

Mingben said,

What can be done for people who all day long tear themselves open, whirl themselves around, looking high and low, in activity and quiescence and speech and silence, their eyes catching on everything incessantly?

What do Zen Masters do for such people except shine a light on their religious attachment to doctrine

Mingben continues,

They just don’t understand that there’s no boundary between the holy sages and Buddha patriarchs and the infinite world of things.

Enlightenment doesn’t come from a supernatural place arrived at by means of religious practice. The world of Zen Masters is no different from this one.

Mingben continues,

They turn the wheel in vain, their country slides willingly into the sea.

I think Mingben is giving two warnings here.

First, people attached to religious doctrines aren’t able to expound the Zen teaching.

Second, those who pretend that they are inevitable make a disaster wherever they go. Look at the multitude of sex scandals, inability to publically AMA, and drug abuse in the Dogen Buddhist communities.
