Part 16: One Thought of Deviation
A monk asked, "'Although the Path does not dwell in a result,
nevertheless, [walking] the Path is able to cause [results].'1
如何。What [is the explanation for this]?"
The Master said, "He [Asanga] is an ancient person.
Nowadays, [we] must not fail to revere the warning:
我不是渠。渠不是我。'I am not him, he is not me'.2
He [who comprehends this] acts like a fox enslaving a white ox,
treading onward, yet happily.
If you have a single thought of deviation,
then [it is] difficult to devote oneself."
The Monk asked, "Why do you say a single thought of deviation
[makes it] difficult to devote oneself?"
Only one thought of deviation,
and then there are two roots of 'superior' and 'inferior'.
It's not that sentimental opinions follow other causes and effects.
Furthermore, what is one's own basis to distinguish?"
Notes:
1. This is a quote from Asanga, founder of the Yogachara school, in his text Vajracchedikabhasya commenting on this section from the Diamond Sutra: "Therefore, Subhuti, bodhisattvas should aspire to enlightenment detached from all images. They should not activate the mind dwelling on form, they should not activate the mind dwelling on sound, scent, flavor, feeling, or phenomena. They should activate the mind without dwelling on anything. If the mind dwells anywhere, this is an abode." (Cleary)
2. An expression. 'Him' here refers to 'the self'. Dongshan upon his great realization would later say "Earnestly avoid seeking without, Lest it recede far from you. Today I am walking alone, Yet everywhere I meet him. He is now no other than myself, But I am not now him. It must be understood in this way In order to merge with Suchness."
