Hi there,
I am new to reddit and to this Zen forum. I have been practising meditation and studying Buddhism for the past 8 years. For the past few days I have been reading the posts on this forum and I have seen multiple comments stating the importance of knowing what Zen masters say and 'knowing how to quote Zen masters'. I have followed what some users told me and bought some of the introductory texts. The thing is, I do not know how to approach them. With Buddhist texts I would just read them, reflect on them, and then move on. But I understand that these texts are not exactly Buddhist.
How do you work through Zen masters texts? Do you read their koans over and over until something 'clicks' and then come and discuss them on the forum? I also believe I have read somewhere that the understanding they provide is something that is beyond conceptual thinking.
Currently, I am unable to understand a lot of the comments that I read on the forum. I hope this changes once I get into the texts more deeply. Thank you for your help.
