Case 31: Xinghua Levies a Penalty
Case:
Xinghua 830-888 was from Linji, he addressed the monastery work supervisor Kebin, saying, “In a short while you will be the teacher in charge.”
Kebin said, “I will not enter into this company.”
The master said, “Do you not enter having understood, or do you not enter not having understood?”
Kebin said, “I won’t say.”
The master then struck him, saying, “Supervisor Kebin, has lost this Dharma battle; the penalty is five strings of cash with which to prepare a special meal for the entire assembly.”
The next day, the master himself took the gavel and announced that since Supervisor Kebin had not won the Dharma Battle, he was not allowed to eat. Kebin then left the monastery.
Poem:
Xinghua struck Kebin:
With ach blow a scar.
Although the ancient ones have already gone,
They have left us with an exemplary model.
Thirty years gone from now;
Who will appreciate this kindness?
