Where is your mistake? Fundamentally not understanding, nobody does originally, you then seek understanding. Since you basically do not understand, what are you capable of doing? Look to see where the not understanding comes from. Do you want to know? This non-understanding of yours basically comes from nowhere. Since it comes from nowhere, how could this not understanding be? And when you understand, the nonunderstanding goes nowhere.

Wandering Ronin commentary: It cannot truly be said that there are or are no understandings, but if you believe yourself to have an understanding then you don't understand. If you don't believe you have an understanding, then you don't understand. What do you think you understand, and why do you hold on to this understanding?
What does the Zen master understand, and what does the layperson understand? If understanding is based on conceptual thinking then it isn't the Way, and if understanding is based on the Dharma then it isn't the Way. The Way is not even the Way. There are no understandings whatsoever in the Void, and the Void is beyond understanding. Do you understand?
