Forgive me, I'm a beginner and am still learning about Buddhism. I don't ask this question out of spite , but curiosity, couldn't think how to word it without it sounding a little judgemental. But it seems to me that Zen comes from 'Chan' which is a specific sect of Chinese Buddhism that evolved in to Japanese Zen (and of course other forms in other nations). In turn, this word comes from the Sanskrit 'Dhyana', the meditation mentioned by the Buddha. It seems like something with a simple (well it's still quite complex really, but not relatively) definition, yet I see people discuss what is Zen and whether or not something is Zen so often here, as if it's this abstract philosophical concept. Can someone explain this? Have I misunderstood. Please forgive my ignorance.
