Repost -- Why we study Zen: "American Chopper" style

--The ancient said, "Your complete refusal to engage with any of the great Buddhist Scriptures shows your commitment to your ignorance. Rather than trying to conform your actions and practices with the great Dharma you ruin it by false-heartedly following your own contingent and self-created misinterpretations.

--The other said, "Even the great Zen teachers themselves say that dogma and scripture are not ultimately necessary for awakening! Why do you insist on propagating dead words which cannot cause awakening?

--The ancient said, "Oh, and who told you that? Yourself? It was from scripture that you learned scripture is not strictly necessary for awakening. Your behavior is not consistent with those of the great masters who carefully guarded the dharma transmission and wrote many great works! You hasty fool, you have not yet conquered your own delusions! The meaning of the middle path is to avoid the two errors of scriptural obsession and naive self-teaching!

--The other said, "I AM ALREADY AWAKE. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS ZEN, AND DELUSION DOES NOT EXIST. DO YOU NOT SEE THAT I AM EMPTY?"

--The ancient said, "Anyone can awaken at any moment, even now, even today, but you defend your own misinterpretations and cling to the position of intellectual pride in order to feel like an enlightened man. Why do you say to me in words that you are awake? If you really are awake, then tell me, WHO AM I POINTING TO?!
