When the Layman went to Zen Master Ta-yu's place on Mount Fu-yang, they sat down for lunch together.
Just as the Layman was about to serve himself from one of the pots, Ta-yu grabbed his arm and said, “The Vimalakirti Sutra speaks about the mind being nourished by whatever is given. Your action [of serving yourself] betrays this. Does the Layman go along with it or not?”
The Layman said, “Didn't Subhuti get his fill at that moment?”
Ta-yu said, “But we're not talking about him.”
The Layman said, “When I put food in my mouth, everyone is given sustenance.”
Ta-yu then stopped eating.
The Layman said, “Please! Finish what you were saying.”
