I wanted to post this earlier in the day, but it didn't happen. I'm sorry to those on the other side of the pond who will be seeing this quite late.
The venerable wandering ronin may no longer be with us, but let's keep sharing poems, verses, haikus, songs--whatever you got!
Can you tell me how art has anything to do with Zen?
Here's an example from Kuei Shan:
[After Te Shan had visited, in the evening] Kuei Shan asked the head monk, "Where is that newcomer who just came?"
The head monk answered, "At that time he turned his back on the teaching hall, put on his straw sandals, and departed."
Kuei Shan said, "Hereafter that lad will go to the summit of a solitary peak, build himself a grass hut, and go on scolding the Buddhas and reviling the Patriarchs."
Hsueh Tou added the comment, "He adds frost to snow."
Also, Yantou said:
For the universal principle, the subject of the source, you need to distinguish expressions.
If you do not distinguish expressions, then it is impossible to understand sayings.
What are expressions?
When you don’t think of anything at all, this is called expression of the absolute.
It is also called dwelling at the peak, or attaining stabilization, or clarity, or wakefulness, or directness, or the time before Buddha is born, or becoming grounded.
[...]
Well, come on then! Bring me to a peak.
I've stayed, I've moved and been sent
through these gardens made of numbers
and dispersed concentration.
Stairs built down, though unreliably
towards some fascination--
floating independently--
concern for just itself.
Ten ropes I've tied myself
all frayed.
5 candles lit to run through wicks
still hold their flame
today.
