A monk asked:
"I find it impossible to control all my passions and delusions. What should I do? It's simply proved too much for me, and I wish to receive your instruction."
The Master replied:
_
_
"Your idea of wanting to control your passions and delusions is itself delusion
_
_
,changing the Buddha Mind for delusion!
_
Delusions don't have any actual substance when they arise.
_
In fact, they're nothing but shadow figures, things you've seen and heard that pop up sporadically in response to circumstances."
_
Again, the monk questioned the Master: "What is enlightenment?"
_
The Master replied:
_
_
"There's no such thing as enlightenment.
_
_
It's a completely extraneous pursuit.
_
_
To realize conclusively that the Buddha Mind you have from your parents innately is unborn and marvelously illuminating—that's enlightenment.
_
_
Not realizing this makes you deluded.
_
Since the Original Buddha Mind is unborn, it functions without thoughts of delusion or thoughts of wanting to be enlightened.
_
_
As soon as you think of wanting to be enlightened, you leave the place of the Unborn and go counter to it.
_
_
Because the Buddha Mind is unborn, it has no thoughts at all. Thoughts are the source of delusion. When thoughts are gone, delusion vanishes too. And once you've stopped being deluded, talking about wanting to attain 'enlightenment' certainly is useless, don't you agree?"
It is very interesting here the kind of paradoxical relationship many people bounce back and forth*, in their own ways, on "Nothing to do." and "Something to do."
You may read Bankei and the Masters, speaking Endlessly on "Nothing to do." but still the great momentum on /r/Zen comes from the various "Something to do." readings people have of the texts.
It can range from 'practicing a technique for a thousand kalpas in perfect alignment' to "just move/get rid of/gain this 'slight' thing and you will be All Set."
Fools. All of them.
Carrots on sticks!
What does it matter if it is hitched up right in front of your face that you can almost touch it with your tongue or a million miles away?
You still end up chasing the %#@&-ing carrot!
When will your belly be finally full of that sweet Beta Carotene?
