Irrespective of your views on "rebirth", and the migration of some aspect of human consciousness to another emergent lifeform upon death, is there an intellectual history that describes the imagined mechanics of how a deceased person's consciousness becomes linked or moves to a new lifeform?

I am specifically interested in the intellectual history of ideas regarding hypothetical forces or natural processes, real or imagined, that would guide/propel/move/link some aspect of a deceased person's consciousness or karmic imprint to another lifeform. How have sages or scholars endeavoured to describe such a process in terms of the underlying mechanics of motion or transferral?
