Zen Culture vs Western Buddhist/Evangelical Christian Culture: Dramatic Differences

The ongoing disputes between r/Zen and r/Buddhism, r/ZenBuddhism, r/Meditation, r/Psychonauts, and r/Awakening exactly mirror longstanding cultural differences between Zen and the various Buddhist religions.

  1. Zen demands literacy... Western Buddhists and Christians insist on being illiterate "beginner experts".

    • Look at any book of instruction written by a Zen Master... they all require not only academic skills but some background in the subject
    • Soto Zen Master Wansong's Book of Serenity: 512 pages
    • Books from Zazen Buddhism like Beginner's Mind by Shunryu are written below a twelfth grade level of reading.
  2. Zen demands public discussion... Western Buddhism and Evangelical Christianity encourage censorship, private testimony, and "prayer walls".

  3. Zen is aggressively intolerant... Western Buddhism and Evangelical Christianity are blindly inclusively.
