The master entered the hall to address the assembly and said,“Brothers, if for your entire life you do not leave the monastery, and if you do not speak for five or ten years, there is no one who would call you someone who cannot speak. Beyond this, what could even a Buddha do to you? If you do not believe [what I say], you can cut off my head.”
There are many passages in this book that go over my head, oh well. I won't exert myself over them frantically.
When Joshu says do not speak for 5-10 years, does he mean not to speak and seek the dharma in a way of dialogue? As in the statements of Zen :
- Not based on the written word,
- Not based on teachings,
If so then great! .... however that is a teaching AND it's in written word....
