Yunmen said in a lecture, “Within heaven and earth, among the worlds, there is a jewel hidden in the body.1 I pick up a lantern from within the Buddha’s throne, placing it atop the Triple Gate. What have I done?”
Answering himself, he said, “Chase after the variety of things, and one’s thoughts are swept along with it.”
He also said, “Clouds emerge as the thunder booms.”
White clouds stretch out and drift above the mountains,
While the bright moon comes and goes on the sky’s edge—
Bowing my head, I retreat under the thatched roof,
And unconsciously chuckle aloud a few times.
1 ch. xíng shān 形山 literally means “in the shape of a mountain,” which is an old Buddhist reference to the physical body.
…
A monk asked, “What about this talk of surpassing the buddhas and transcending the Patriarchs?”
Yunmen said, “Sesame1 cake.”
Yunmen’s sesame cake appears quite modest,
Nothing like the great furnace of the Dharma Lotus.
Satisfied, he rests with his sword at his side—
Who asks about leisurely Bodhidharma coming from the West?
1 ch. hú 糊 more specifically refers to a paste made from a grain, possibly rice like congee, or maybe sesame. Whatever the case, we are talking about fairly tasteless food being cooked into the shape of a cake.
