A monk asked Yunmen, “If you kill your mother or father, you repent before the Buddha—where do you repent if you kill the Buddha and the patriarchs?”
The Master said, “Exposed!”
[0301a19] 雲門因僧問。殺父殺母。佛前懺悔。殺佛殺祖向甚處懺悔。師曰。露。
Nowhere to escape the dust stirred up by the churning earth,
I turn ‘round, pressing on to arrive before the royal tower,
And looking back I can’t see the path I just took—
Below me lies the underworld, above me the sky.

A monk asked Yunmen, “What is the samadhi of every particle of dust?”
The Master replied, “Rice in the bowl, water in the bucket.”

Three thousand beatings in the morning is not too many,
Eight hundred beatings in the evening is not too few—
Rice in the bowl, water in the bucket…
One should refrain from explaining everything in front of others.

For the next little while, posting will be a little more sporadic. I've got a bunch of things happening in life all at once and happy to be a part of that as well.
I will also post here and there some lectures by Baiyun Duan that I translated as I've been generally prepping for official publication, as well as a essay I did on Sengcan and some commentaries on cases from other Zen Masters that I was looking into on cases that interested me.
Feel free if you have any questions related to translation or what else is lying around in the Zen texts that haven't been translated yet. If I have a moment, I'm usually fairly well disposed to look into a little mystery.
Thanks you for the support, kind words, and continuing interest in this little slice of life.
