Baiyun Duan 65: Jingqing Hears the Sound of the River

Jingqing asked Xuansha, “I am a man of learning who has just now entered the school—I ask that the teacher please point out the way in.”

Xuansha said, “Do you now hear the sound of the Yangxi river, or not?”

“I hear.”

“This is where you enter.”

[0301a04] 玄沙因鏡清問。學人乍入叢林。乞師指個入路。師曰。還聞偃溪水聲否。曰聞。師曰。是汝入處。

Child of Kunlun born with eyes of azure,
Unaware of his own exceptional skill—
How many times has the black wind stirred up the seas?
Waves of the Mind appear, disappear in their own leisurely play.
