I thought it would be fun to throw together this AMA in the style of the r/AMA subreddit for the community, so that members can ask me anything about translation; what goes into it? how effective is it? why do I pick particular projects? what did I do to learn this skill?
I believe that a level of transparency between people who translate and readers can only benefit the community, and help lay bare things that may not be apparent in the translations themselves; what are the motivations? what are the mistakes, or the general shortcomings of translating medieval Chinese—Zen in particular? what are the particular goals I hope to achieve, and what is my approach?
I also have a level of expertise at this point, and may be able to answer questions about translations that already exist, what's out there to be translated still, what I see as the issues with Zen literature in general, from the vantage point that I have while studying this topic every day for a few years now.
If you haven't read the Rujing book, that should be fine. It is still available for free, and I'll re-upload it again when the link expires. Nearly 100 people have downloaded the book at this point, plus some sales, so many people have questions about what they've read, but if you're not one of those people, don't be shy—there might be another question from your unique perspective that will be of benefit to others.
