I enjoyed yesterdays Random Qoute foray so much, I'm gonna do another one.. I think this is the way forward ( Sengcan says that the way is easy for those who have no preference ( of Qoutes)) even though yesterday's OP generated an all time low of zero upvotes. ( I think the Transmission of Mind brand has lost its panache now and couple that with the unfathomable number of alts hitting the forum, due in no short measure to the blocking mechanism, the whole mechanism of r/zen has changed)
Anyway, here is just one random Quote for today, I've still got my Books handy, so I'm gonna grab a sucker at random, flick through to a random page and give a random opinion.. Sounds good eh?

OK the random book is Two Zen Classics. The case is Joshus "No Justification"
.
Hekigaroku.. Case 38. Joshu's " No Justification"
.
.
Main Subject. A monk said to Joshu " You so often quote the words" The real Way is not difficult. It only abhors choice and attatchment " isn't that your point of attatchment?" Joshu said " A man asked me the same question once before, and five years later I have still found no justification for it"
.
.
Wow, what a coincidence.. To land on Joshu Qouting Sengcan.. 😁
.
This is an age old question and one that pops up irrespective of this case, the question of, if we have no attachment, then why do we attach to the quotes of old Masters? Or why do we attach to teachings?
Joshu isn't attached to it, he is in a position as a teacher, and the teacher requires fingers to be pointed at moons, that's all..
The condition of teacher and student requires a teaching, and obviously Joshu thinks that this is the teaching that has the most bang for the buck..
Sekida (The author and translator) does go onto explain his opinion on the case in his own comments, and to be fair to Sekida, this is probably the least amount of knackers I've read from him, but I'm sure you guys don't want to hear his comments.
