Dongshan said to an assembly, "Brethren, at the beginning of autumn, the end of summer, you go east and go west; you should just go where there is not a single inch of grass for ten thousand miles." He also said, "But how do you go where there is not an inch of grass for ten thousand miles?"

Later a monk cited this to Shishuang. Shishuang said, "As soon as you go out the gate there's grass."

Dahui commented, "Haven't you heard it said that a single drop of lion's milk disperses ten gallons of donkey milk?"
