New age has this anti mental chatter thing. Instead, Zen says that time spent murking through thoughts, contemplating, is time spent not resolving issues. And that wading in worlds of make believe subdues problems, but does not solve them.
We talked about "stopping thought" on a recent yet to be published podcast. Generally, people think about trying to stop what they have managed to work out might be what "thinking is", usually like a confusing mess of biological, emotional, and problem solving activities.
Instead in Zen it's like "if you know the chair, its size is more than enough". I say, what comes up that's not sufficient?
Chongshou pointed to a chair and said, “If you know the chair, its size is more than enough.
Xuedou, citing this, said, “When a marsh is extensive, it can conceal a mountain; reason can subdue a leopard.”
I've been reading this one case for like a month on accident. Sorry.
