Quantum Conditional Arising

Huangbo said

The entire void stretching out in all directions is of one substance with Mind; and, since Mind is fundamentally undifferentiated, so must it be with everything else. Different entities appear to you only because your perceptions differ.

One of the most baffling mysteries of quantum physics for decades has been the nature of light. Experiments repeatedly confirm that light is both a particle and a wave at the same time, and will be observed as either depending on conditions. A recent experiment is Brazil has just confirmed this yet again.

“The main takeaway from the April 2022 study is that physical reality in the quantum world is made of mutually exclusive entities that, nonetheless, do not contradict but complete each other.”

What we observe is not separate from us, and depends on our observation to come into being. Basically, quantum physics is confirming that all of reality is not separate from mind, and it only comes into being when we observe and discriminate. It’s astounding that modern quantum physics is continually confirming what Zen masters were saying 1500 years ago. Everything arises conditionally.

Treasury of the Eye of True Teaching #522

When the fifth patriarch was in Chang'an lecturing on the Flower Ornament scripture, a monk came and asked, "What is the meaning of the conditional arising of the nature of reality?" The patriarch was silent. Chan master Anguo Ting was standing by in attendance at the time; he said, "Great worthy, right when you produce a single thought, this is conditional arising in the nature of reality." That monk was greatly enlightened at these words. Dahui said, "Before a single thought has yet arisen, conditional arising cannot be nonexistent. One might say, when a single thought has not yet arisen, what do you call conditional arising? I just need you to speak thus.

It’s the interaction that brings both observer and observed into being. They are not separate, it’s all thus.

More Huangbo

The ephemeral may be likened to mere emptiness; the Great Void is perfection wherein is neither lack nor superfluity, a uniform quiescence in which all activity is stilled.
