Friday Night Poetry Slam

THEME: selected verses of Layman Pang, verse 4

I have been appreciating the verses of Layman Pang that are translated by Ruth Fuller Sasaki, Yoshita Iriya, and Dana Fraser in "A Man of Zen: The Recorded Sayings of Layman Pang", so for the next several weeks, I intend to share a verse from the Layman and respond with a verse of my own.

Share your zen poetry below. The theme is merely a suggestion.

Layman P'ang's Verse

Traveling the path is easy,

Traveling the path is easy!

Within, without and in between I depend upon innate Wisdom:

Innate Wisdom being non-sentient, the dharmas are not born;

Birthless, I enter the true Principle.

Not form, not mind, a single radiance streams forth;

In the mind-ground appears the Udumbara tree of Emptiness.

Translator's note: The Udumbara tree is a legendary tree said to flower every three thousand years.

Jungle_Toad's verse

Growing from seed to root, from to stalk to stem

Consciousness flowers forth a formless gem

Flowing out in all directions, the true self resonates

Letting go of all conceptions, the Prajna emanates

Cutting apart the fabric; sewing it up with thread.

One foot after the other: go straight ahead!
