Zen Masters after Wumen:
Hengchan (1222-1289)
On midsummer's day up in the hall, Hengchuan quoted Longya's verse:
To study the Path first you must have some enlightenment as a means.
It's like racing speedy dragon-boats:
Though afterward you're back in your old place on open ground,
Only having won the race can you rest.
Hengchuan picked up his staff, threw it down, and returned to the abbot's quarters.
.
Welcome! ewk comment: "Staff drop".
That's his whole lecture? No wonder nobody gets enlightened. Zen Masters' hard work day: gone in 60 seconds.
Still, it puts textual study in perspective, right? Great job only writing for enlightened people.
