It is to reverse the outgoing tendencies of awareness. The momentum is still there but it goes inwards because of the closed sense gates. The inward movement is easier to direct towards the self. Too much movement whether thinking or twitching dissipates the energy. The specific zazen posture is just an effective positioning of the body for knowledge of self.
