Gateless Gate #12: ZUIGAN’S CALLING THE MASTER

Every day Zuigan (Shi)gen used to call to him­ self, "True Self!"，and would answer, "Yes?" "Awake! Awake!" he would cry, and "Yes! Yes!" he would answer. "From now onwards, do not be despised by others, do not let them make a fool of you!’’ "No, I will not!"

It looks to me as though Zuigan's just mocking people here. The question is, which people? Why mock?

Maybe mocking isn't the right word. . . I mean, it is the right word, but what's the purpose of the mocking? What is he actually demonstrating? What's the insight?

Answer: The call is coming from inside the house.

Suchness

There is a light that touches all

And finds its freedom fair.

It holds the world up by an eye,

In suchness finding spare.

​

This light cannot be bought or sold,

It has no market value,

Yet pricelessness is but its truth,

It goes on ever through you.

​

You twist and turn to find its trace,

A fine invisible glare,

But as it’s not in you or I,

You’ll find no victory there.

​

This light that binds the fore but to us

Is nonetheless so smooth,

It picks up things a bottomless way

But shall not pick or choose.

​

To use this light would be so grim

And nonetheless unfaithful,

For moments lost in seeking hold

Are want of ye ungrateful.

​

There is a light that touches all,

But seekers blessed beware:

This light you seek will seek you too

And miss you by a hair.
