[ The Sayings of Layman P’ang A Zen Classic of China Translated by James Green ]
-
The Eyes One day the Layman questioned Pai-lmg, asking, “Can people avoid talking about what they see with their eyes?” Pai-ling said, “How can it be avoided?” The Layman said, “By knowing instantly! By knowing instantly!” Pai-ling said, “The carefree man is never beaten by the stick.” The Layman twirled around, saying, “Beat me! Beat me! Pai-ling reached down and grabbed a stick, but the Layman snatched it from him and said, “So! Can you avoid seeing me?” Pai-ling did not reply
What does windrake see: Honestley? No clue. Familiarity. Space? Can you see space? Form? Ok. Form and space? How do you summerize the infinate voidness of no-thing? Umm with form, like words and stuff. But they dissipate. Hearing? Here and then gone! Tasting... yummy! Ugh now I am sick, now I am on a diet now I hate food... wheres the doughnut! Nah that taste stuff is just a parlor trick. Ok ideas! Wait waht was I talking about? Oh yes purporting my great understanding on a forum about …Zen but what exactly do i understand? Ideas are even more temporary then taste! What is lasting!? Give me permanence!
Worst of all P'ang is pointing out all this attribution cannot be avoided. Then why bother?
Windrake can you know instantly? Of course! Then why are you beating yourself with a stick? wait... a stick, Beatings? Where did P'ang go?
