Dongshan’s record series #15
On the Master's first visit to Lu-tsu, he payed homage and stood waiting. After a short time he went out and re-entered. Lu-tsu said, "Just so, just so. So that's how you are!"
The Master said, "There is definitely someone who disagrees."
Lu-tsu said, "Why do you concern yourself with eloquence?"
The Master accordingly did obeisance and attended Lu-tsu for several months.
This scene is also translated by Ferguson:
When Dongshan came to pay his respects, he bowed, stood up, and stood there attentively. After a while he went out and then came back in.
Luzu said, “Just so! Just so! So it’s like this.”
Dongshan said, “There are many who don’t approve.”
Luzu said, “Why must you speak contentiously?”
Dongshan then bowed.”
This meeting is with Luzu Baoyun, and we deal with going out and coming back in. Luzu was famous for turning around and facing the wall, Bodhidharma-style, when students entered. Seemingly, Luzu approved, as Dongshan breezed out and in. Nonetheless, Luzu offered something unexpected, enough for Dongshan to stay on. What was it?
