Warning! Warning! Warning!

One day a government official came and asked for the essentials of the teaching.  The master Wuzu said, “Officer, have you ever read the poem on [Qiannu/Seijo]?  ‘She repeatedly calls her maid, but there is nothing for her to do—she just wants her husband to hear her voice.’  If you understand this, your study is finished.”

Hearing this, Yuanwu said to the master, “Can these two lines activate potential?”

Wuzu immediately said, “Hemp, three pounds.”

Wuzu had barely spoken the first word when Yuanwu was suddenly greatly enlightened.  Just then a cock crowed; he pointed to it and said, “Do you understand Chan too?”

Then he told Wuzu, “Today I’ve lost present machinations and gotten rid of things in my heart.”

Wuzu was overjoyed.

There been plenty abuzz about regarding what sort of warnings this subreddit should offer to outsiders first stepping foot in this Zen Sangha. Given that much of that question is sidestepped by the fact that Zen Masters go on & on printing warning labels for Zen, the question really just becomes a matter of what fits on the sidebar & what clears up the community's intention for the most prominent category of trolls, namely New Agers.

There are at least a few warnings Wuzu & Yuanwu present regarding the following:

  • Zen Study

  • Enlightenment

  • Testing

What's a side-bar warning label look like wrt. these?

(Bonus points for additional citations.)
