Zhaozhou Calling out 'Not Zen'

A monk asked, "From what is the Way born?"

The master said, "That would be being born, but the Way is not subject to birth and death."

The monk said, "Isn't that nature?"

The master said, "That is nature, however the Way is not so."

People confuse this for a teaching and then bumble around avoid having to address the knife contained in this case. It's sharp & Zhaozhou's wielding it!

So, the Zen Way:

  • Not subject to birth & death

  • Isn't connected with nature

The former slices up religions that assert their 'Way' is something other than what they give birth to when insisting that their likes/dislikes aren't arbitrary.

The latter cuts through anyone who tries to pin what Zen Masters point to as being rooted in some particular expression expressing the unchangeable.

Since Zen Masters do this slicing & dicing on a daily basis...why would anyone get worked up in /r/Zen when people raise it for discussion?
