Wumen's Longwinded Preface

The Buddha's words make mind their foundation; the dharma gate hinges on no gate.

It is Gateless, but what are you doing with your life to pass through?

How do you not see the Way? Anything that comes in through the gate is not precious. That which is dependent on conditions will eventually fall apart.

Talking like this...it is just as setting sail with no wind; digging wounds into healthy skin.

Moreover, this business of hunting out stagnant words & phrases? It is swinging a stick to hit the moon; scratching the boot to get at the itch. What relation does it have?

In the Summer of 1228, I, Huikai, head of the Longxiang community in Dongjia accepted their petition, took the old-timers public cases as a door-knocker and, on this basis, guided the students.

Throughout this records transcription, no heed was paid to fixed order. The first was not established in relation to the last, but, taken together, there are forty-eight cases.

If there is a fellow, heedless of peril, who approaches this matter straightforwardly, then even the eight-armed Nezha cannot hinder them.

What's more is that even the twenty-eight of India & the six of China would have no choice but to scatter to the wind and to beg for their life.

Supposing, however, this fellow shilly-shallies about, then it is just the same as if they were looking through a shuttered window for a mounted steed: blink for a moment, and it's long since flown past.

The Great Way is Gateless;

All over are side-trails.

Passing through this checkpoint,

You go alone through heaven & earth.

It only be shocking how many people crowding into our Sangha haven't encountered Wumen if we stopped counting the multitude who claim to totally know all about him but have yet to answer basic questions about their study.

Wumen, right from the get-go he comes out with questions that distinguishes people here to straightforwardly approach this matter, people here to shilly-shally about, and trolls here that express their fear to face Wumen by all manner of whining.

How about taking a crack at this...what's the worst that could happen? You able to hold a conversation about it?

Here's the first one:

  • What are you doing with your life to pass through?
