Currently going through Dahui's letters, and found this about their experience with silent illumination1 Zen:
I was once also taken in by these people. If I had not later met real Buddhist teachers, I would perhaps have wasted a lifetime. Every time I think about this, I can't bear it. Therefore I don't fear the bad karma, but work with all my strength to save people from this evil.
1 Silent Illumination Zen is the idea that we are all inherently awakened, and that all we need to do to realize the Buddha nature is to turn off the mind, usually with meditation. This is why, when you read modern Soto influenced Zen monks speak about meditation, they often say it is the place where we are already perfect or that it perfectly reveals our original nature in every moment.
