Practicing with Wumenguan - Case 10: I want to ask you...

I think Wonderwheel fell down on the job here: http://home.pon.net/wildrose/gateless-10.htm

Somebody could check Blyth and Repps

Mumon's Comment

Seizei pretended to retreat. What was his scheme?

Sõzan had the eye of Buddha and saw through his opponent's motive

However, I want to ask you, at what point did Seizei drink wine?

.

(Welcome link) (ewkwho?) note: Two big deal practices in this little bit of text.

  1. Wumen asks two questions... answering them, answering questions, is central to Zen.
  2. "At what point did Seizei drink wine?" is just beautiful... when did you drink it? Zen Masters ask all these questions about the texts, but they are really asking you about you. When they ask you about you, they are of course also asking you questions about the text. The engagement between Zen students and dialogues is like nothing anywhere else... just as Zen Masters dialogue with their ancestors, so is everybody who picks up a Zen text.

Practicing with Wumenguan has to include the high school book report standard... if you can't write a high school book report on each Case in Wumenguan, then how can you claim you study Zen? That would be like saying you study French, but not knowing how to pronounce the words.

Funny story: I came through immigration at LAX in February. There was this new quarantine procedure where you had to wait for your name to be called before you could be processed. Everybody was standing around hoping to get infected in this tiny cattle pen. When the immigration officials tried to call out Chinese names, they didn't know how to pronounce zh or t or r or z. The Chinese people didn't know their names were being called. I came through immigration in SanFran last month, and immigration was staffed by native speakers who could tell you what province they were born in. Can't write a high school book report about a text? Can't speak the language.
