This is why the ineffable message of Zen is to be understood on one’s own. I have no Zen for you to study, no Doctrine for you to discuss. I just want you to tune in on your own.
...
Did not one of the Patriarchs say, “Freedom from thoughts is the source, freedom from appearances is the substance”? If you just shout and dap, when will you ever be done?
I am not endorsing Foyan, merely looking into his words and meanings for my own edification and as a lamp to shine back on my own mind. (What case is it where the master circles a tree stump?)
After all, for Foyan to be right, I would have to be right. Where does being right begin?
As to the patriarchs, can no-thought be forced like the Dogen way, to cheat seeing past appearances? Where does one find the courage stare at a wall for 9 years if one does not know where their courage is? The whole thing spirals if you ask if courage is needed.
