Sharing Experience thread~ Have you visited a Zen tradition temple or Monastery? Share about it here!

Did you attend a retreat?

Practice meditation?

Walk in the Garden?

Burn down the temple?

Take the staff of the head monk?

What was it like!

Super curious to hear about anyones experiences~

I'll throw in my own experience for example and good measure.

I once was basically in the middle of nowhere and came across this Vietnamese style temple. I'm pretty sure it was Thién tradition!

Anyway I get there basically just stopped there at the hopes of resting for a night and getting some food. In ther middle of rural Arizona I believe although not sure.

So I get there and am greeted by some lay people, I called ahead before arriving.

Having arrived I was quite tired and exhausted. The head monk is this old Vietnamese gentleman and he offers me some food etc. Had a very intense gaze. I sat down to eat and asked about if I would be able to stay for a night.

He said no I couldnt stay because I wasn't a monk and than offered to train me to be a monk if I was interested and than I could stay. It was weird. This was a number of years ago so the memory is a bit hazy.

I left shortly after.

Okay that's it.

Looking forward to seeing what kind of experiences the community has had at Zen temples
