From Case 466 of Dahui's Treasury of the Eye of the True Teaching
Master Touzi was asked by a monk, "All sounds are the voice of Buddha--is this not so?"
He said, "Yes."
The monk said, "Master, don't make a sound farting.1"
Touzi then hit him.
The monk also asked, "Coarse words and fine speech all return to the ultimate truth--is this so?"
He said, "Yes."
The monk said, "Can I call you an ass?"
Touzi then hit him.
Dahui said. "Two outlaws are foiled."
Dahui also said, "But tell me, which is a bush bandit, and which one is a true rebel?"
[1] - 'a sound farting' or 'farting sound'? Cleary has been known for sloppy proofreading; this case could go with clarification on this point...
Wasn't just two outlaws foiled in this case, Dahui got roped into this steaming mess with his own banditry. Fully exposed!!
Of the three...which got away and which got taken in?
