Zen is not Buddhism

Often times the above comes up, very seldom are people willing to state clearly why it comes up.

If you get into the text (p 135) note that a main protagonist (Hakamaya) differentiates between Japanese Zen (which he classifies as not Buddhism) and Chinese Ch'an (which he does not classify as not Buddhism).
