- Sozan, a Chinese Master, was asked by a student, “What is the most valuable thing in the world?” - “The head of a dead cat.” Replied Sozan.
- “Why is the head of a dead cat the most valuable thing in the world?” the student inquired further.
- “Because,” Sozan answered, “no one can name its price.”
I’ve derived two trains of thought from this koan, a mundane one and a metaphysical karma one.
The mundane one simply being, hey it’s the head of a dead cat. Who the fuck would spend money on something like that?
The spiritual one being no one can tell where the cat’s going after having left the skin-bag.
