Friday Night Citation Rager: /r/Zen Edition

R.D.M. Shaw provided a list of 'qualities and ideals' he refers to as being assigned to Zen Masters by other Zen Masters in the endnotes of his Blue Cliff Record translation. Right off a cursory run of the text, some of the claimed citations don't turn up anything or the connection between the way it was expressed and Shaw's rendering is far-fetched and misleading.

So? Time to get the whip cracking and delve into the mines to see how much water, if any, these citations hold in comparison to the texts.

The Fully Enlightened Man

1.Realises the difference between the Absolute and the Relative (No 2).

2.Sees the Truth in and through Beauty (No 7).

3.Transcends all distinctions (No 8).

4.'Controls the Universe' (No 11).

5.Promotes the orderliness of Heaven (No 68).

17.Has ascended the three Dragon Gates (passed all difficulties) (No 41).

18.Is not afraid to 'enter the tiger's den' (No 15).

19.Is detatched from outside things (No 6).

20.Is 'at one with himself' (No 6).

21.Is free and self-determined (No 7).

22.Lives a disciplined life (Nos 3 and 8).

23.Has descended into the Green Dragon's Cave (Nos 3 and 8)

26.Can make instant decisions (No 35).

27.Is humble towards others (No 33).

28.Controls his own senses (No 6).

35.Perceives the psychological momnt (No 39).

39.Is 'like a smithy's forge (expert for his job) (No 43).

40.Knows how to meet any crisis (No 41).

41.Does his daily chores carefully and cheerfully (No 12).
